Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is located in the southwestern part of India and is the capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala. I spent a few days in this city and was surprised by the amount of fun things to do in Trivandrum and by how much I liked it here. The golden sand beaches, historic temples and monuments like the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple and the rich culture make it a great place to visit while in Kerala.
Here’s some top things to do in Trivandrum;
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is probably the number one tourist attraction that you must do while in Trivandrum. Here you can find Asian elephants, tigers, leopards, King Cobras and Tortoise. Not to mention the crocodile breeding center and lion safari park. Neyar Wildlife sanctuary is about 30 km outside of Trivandrum and worth the tuk tuk ride!
Kovalam Beach is a gorgeous white sand beach that’s unsurprisingly very popular with tourists. European hippies have been coming to Kovalam beach since the 60’s. Here you can do everything from get a massage to go for a cruise on a catamaran. Loads of budget accommodation is available here too and there’s also yoga centers, Ayurveda retreats and lots of places to shop!

Located on a hill the palace attracts visitors for the various cultural events throughout the year. Kanakakkunnu Palace was constructed during the reign of His Highness Sree Moolam Thirunal Maharaja, a famous Travancore king.
Napier Museum should definitely be added to your list of things to do in Trivandrum. Named after the former Madras Governor General, John Napier, its architecture reflects a combination of Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles. Here you can see a temple chariot, ivory carvings and other ancient ornaments.
Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple
I love bling! This golden temple is one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples or Divya Desams in India. Located inside the east fort in Trivandrum, the Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple showcases a mix of Kerala and Dravidian architecture.
There’s also Poover Island, Veli Tourist Village, Kottarakkara Ganapathy Temple and my favorite Varkala Beach.
